5 Ways to Deal with the Holiday Blues

It’s that time of year again, the one that everyone tells you should mean happiness, joy, and goodwill to mankind. While the holiday season should certainly represent all of these things, it also brings a good deal of stress along with it. If we are not careful, that stress can manifest itself into something more dangerous, such as depression.

However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be this way. There are steps that we can take to make sure we get the most out of the holiday season, without all of the stress that often accompanies it. Here’s a list of possible ways to deal with the holiday blues, and enjoy this time of year…

1. Don’t over-medicate

During this time, every year, there is a tendency for the rate of antidepressant use to go up. When those numbers start to rise, so to does the rate of abuse for those drugs. This isn’t a good thing for anybody. Many of these medications can carry severe health risks, and usually contain mood-altering substances that can numb the emotions during a time of year that is supposed to be based around positive emotions.

As the holiday season draws nearer (and as bonuses start coming in), shopping seems to be one of the most exciting things to do. Well, who doesn’t want to shop? While buying the things which we have been looking forward to own before the year ends …

2. Keep healthy

Even those who live healthy lifestyles for most of the year tend to let themselves slip during the holiday season. Setting up healthy habits for yourself to adhere to will help you fight depression, and keep you in a proactive state of mind that makes you feel fresh and alive.

This doesn’t mean you can’t let loose and enjoy some goodies at a few holiday parties. On the contrary, you absolutely should let loose every now and then. However, try to keep up healthy eating habits outside of those. Find a routine for yourself that you enjoy and stick to it. Also, never forget to keep up on sleep!

3. Don’t drink too much

There seems to be a rising temptation to drink a lot during the holidays. Whether this is due to mounting stress or a series of binge drinking escapades, over drinking is never a good idea. Rather than being a good stress reliever, alcohol is actually a depressant, which could make matters worse. Also, using alcohol as an escape from the difficulties of the holiday season will make you further dependent on it.

This will likely heighten the things to be stressful in the long run. On top of all of that, hangovers are likely to dip into other holiday fun. By all means, enjoy a drink at a part, but remember to employ moderation, even during the holidays.

4. Don’t overdo it

It’s understandable to want to fill every waking moment of your holiday season with something fun and exciting. After all, this wonderful season only comes once a year. However, doing this will likely have an adverse affect on your entire holiday experience.

In the end, you’ll likely find yourself getting burned out too early, which could lead to cynicism and further stress. Be sure to spread out all the fun things you want to do. Remember, quality over quantity. Work to make the fun moments you have even better and more meaningful, rather than try to force a bunch of things together.

One of the biggest negatives of the holidays, the thing that drags down what should be a lovely time to remember what we have and what we live for, is the rampant consumerism that accompanies the season. If you allow that dreadful force of marketing ploys and over-production to suck you in, then this entire time of the year will feel like one big chore.

Don’t be that person. Do something kind for others. Take time for yourself to think about the importance of the holidays. Do something fulfilling with your loved ones. It’s not about the things. It’s about the experiences. Don’t lose sight of that and it will change the entire season for you.
