7 Biggest Travel Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

travel mistakesYou must have heard that famous saying “To err is human”, we all make mistakes in our lives. When you are travelling abroad, you can easily make a couple of travel mistakes.

But, there are times when these mistakes can end up destroying your trip or it can prove to be a money wasting experience as well.

Having A Pretentious Itinerary

According to me, instead, you should try to be as flexible you can. Make sure you are ready to make changes to your plan because of the weather conditions or money shortage.

It is important you are aware of the time it takes to travel from one location to another (not by distance but when you choose other modes of transport such as car or train).

Don’t forget to include the time for possible delays along with the time you will spend to take rest. Keep one thing in mind, it is not mandatory to explore the whole place in one visit.

It is advisable that you plan the pace of your trip, this will not only help you in exploring the must-see attractions but also help build in some additional unscheduled time.

Over Packing

travel mistakesAccording to me, it is important to carry the things you will need and use frequently while travelling. You have the option of purchasing other stuff when you have reached your destination, who knows you may get the chance of purchasing things at affordable prices.

When you are done packing, make sure you take some time out to review everything once again and if possible take out things you won’t be using frequently, this will only help you in reducing your load.

There are so many things you can remove – extra toiletries, jewellery & valuables, an extra pair of shoes, bulky towels, etc.

Depending Too Much On The Guide Books

Being an avid traveller myself, I know how a guide book can be of great help. I admit that these guide books can come handy when you want to have additional information on the best restaurants, hotels, sights, and various other attractions.

But, according to me, these guide books should only be used as guide books and not like a bible. You can keep the guide book aside and try to have conversations with other fellow travellers and the local people at the venue.

They are the ones who will give you better and in-depth details of the places you should visit and also the places you can avoid, saving your valuable time.

Guidebooks will not share much information about any place, but when you travel to that place and talk to the locals, it’s a whole different story.

Overlooking The Budget

travel mistakesAccording to me, first, you need to set a budget for yourself and make sure you stick to that budget. It is important you have used this budget to explore the place extensively, not as a restriction.

Make sure you make the budget in a way that you have money for emergency expenses. If travelling long-term, make sure you schedule weekly transfers from your savings to your checking, this will give you an idea of what you are allowed to spend.

Not Buying Travel Insurance

According to me, when you have insurance, you will feel more secure in case any unfortunate incident take place such as medical emergency, lost baggage, trip delay or cancellation, etc.

Make sure you have read the fine print carefully and see whether it suits your needs & requirements. Following are some of the risks covered by most of the travel insurance policies –

  • Medical and dental expenses.
  • Emergency evacuation.
  • Accidental death or disablement benefit.
  • Legal assistance and personal liability.
  • Lost travel documents.

Not Checking The Documents

travel mistakesIt goes without saying that if you are travelling to some foreign land, then you need to have proper documents.

I am sure you don’t want to be turned away at a foreign checkpoint as this can be time-consuming, expensive, and at times it can also end your trip.

You can visit the official website of the place you are visiting; there you will find all the documents needed as a traveller.

This will help you in arranging all the documents ahead of time and various other documents you need to carry while travelling abroad.

Tempting Pickpockets

This one is especially for the females. Make sure when you are travelling to a foreign place, you should avoid wearing jewellery. You should also not count wads of currency in public and flaunt your costly DSLR. By doing all this, you are drawing the attention of the pickpockets.

Make sure you have kept all your credit cards, cash, and other valuable items at one place. Only carry the cash you will need for the day and keep rest of the amount hidden safely somewhere else or you can leave them at the hotel.
