The Importance of Being Diagnosed with Mental Illness

Mental IllnessStruggling with mental illness can often feel like an uphill battle. However, what is infinitely worse is trying to struggle with a mental disorder when you don’t even know that you have one.

This isn’t unprecedented. Millions of Americans struggle with mental illness, but far fewer ever receive any sort of help with it, or even get an official diagnosis. Obviously, without a diagnosis, things rarely ever get better.

In fact, things often get worse when we start to rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms. Here are a handful of reasons that it is so important to get diagnosed, if you are suffering from a chronic mental disorder…

Get help sooner

Obviously, those of us with mental illness want to get better (assuming that our disorder isn’t impacting our ability to recognize this).

Well, getting better without a diagnosis is so, so, so much more difficult, because you may not even realize that there is a deep-seated problem that is impacting your behavior.

Because of this, you’re going to devote so much time and energy to trying to fix the symptoms of mental illness, without ever getting to the heart of the problem.

Learn coping mechanisms

When you actually realize that there is a perfect explanation for why you sometimes feel the way you do, you begin to recognize what it is you can do to help prevent the issues that arise from mental illness.

This is incredibly important, because while the feelings of those of us with a mental illness might be understandable, the actions that we resort to aren’t always excusable.

For this reason, coping mechanisms for mental disorders like bipolar and anxiety are crucial to keep a mental illness from dramatically impacting your life and the way that you interact with people.

Your friends and family can help you

Mental IllnessYour friends and family might have been confused by your behavior in the past, and even angry, sad, or frustrated. This is because neither of you had any idea why certain reactions from you were happening.

Once there is an understanding that comes from diagnosis, it begins to be much easier for them to see how they can help you.

This doesn’t mean that you are a charity case that needs them to walk on eggshells around you, but it is important to recognize problematic behavior that can antagonize a mental illness.

Helps you research

One of your greatest tools when you get a diagnosis is going to be your counselor/therapist. Use them as a resource to develop a stronger and healthier mindset, and learn the skills you need to lessen the impact that mental illness has on your life.

Besides your therapist, though, getting a diagnosis empowers you to find out how to help yourself find solutions to your problems. When your emotions are in flux and you don’t know how to get through the day, having the ability to do research about what is ailing you is an empowering truth that you should never underestimate.

Things get better

At the end of the day, you can’t solve a problem that you don’t even know exists. Sure, you might have a suspicion that something is going on, based on reactions that you have to the world around you, or emotional instability that you experience on a regular basis.

However, this does little to assuage the real issue. After you get diagnosed, you can actually begin to heal, because true action can be taken.

This is a much needed first step for people to help improve their personal esteem, relationships with others, and establish a better future.
